From Knowledge to Territory: Turning Insight into Action

MountMed’s work is organised around a simple but demanding principle: research results and knowledge must return to the territory as action. The Institute connects interdisciplinary research, territorial diagnosis, learning activities, capacity building and field implementation to understand the complex realities of mountain territories and transform knowledge into practical, place-based interventions.

Guided by research-action, MountMed works with communities, institutions, researchers, public authorities, and local actors to design, test, and support integrated territorial transitions that are economically viable, socially inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and culturally rooted.

MountMed does not aim to produce a single transferable development model for Mediterranean island mountain territories. Its work contributes to methods that can be adapted to specific territories and case studies. These methods are necessarily multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder, multi-institutional and multi-scalar. They are based on specific situations, local knowledge and scientific and technical research.

The Institute’s creation, following the Troodos Declaration and the Cyprus mountain policy process, responds to the need for cooperation among insular and continental mountain areas and for active contribution to appropriate European policies.
