Research, Innovation and Action for Mediterranean Mountain Regions

● Who We Are

MountMed is a non-profit research-action institute dedicated to Mediterranean island mountain regions. It connects scientific research, local knowledge, education, policy dialogue and field action to support mountain communities in shaping sustainable, resilient and self-determined futures.

The Institute regards Mediterranean island mountain regions as integrated living territories where ecosystems, agricultural systems, water resources, forests, biodiversity, cultural heritage, creativity, communities and local economies are deeply interlinked. From this perspective, MountMed was established on the conviction that these regions are strategic territories for climate resilience, cultural identity and territorial cohesion.

Mediterranean Mountains, despite their assets – their dynamics of tourism and their environmental, cultural and landscape heritage – are rural regions in decline, threatened and under pressure. Yet they are also spaces of initiative, adaptation and social innovation. Understanding connections between territorial resources and their transformation into regenerative pathways requires people, institutions, scientific knowledge and field action.

MountMed, firmly connected to the global and European mountain agenda, operates at the intersection of research, education, policy and local action. It supports mountain territories in understanding challenges, mobilising resources and designing pathways towards sustainable and resilient development. Its work is grounded in research-action; scientific knowledge and local experience are connected with participatory planning, co-design and practical field interventions.

MountMed’s scientific foundation lies in the territorial dimension of endogenous development. This approach starts from the specific character of each place - its communities, landscapes, resources, productive systems, cultural identity and institutional capacities - and supports development that is locally grounded, spatially integrated and collectively shaped.

The Institute functions as a territorial research and innovation ecosystem. It mobilises researchers, local actors, public authorities, communities, entrepreneurs, civil society organisations, and international partners to co-design responses adapted to the social, environmental, cultural and economic challenges of mountain territories.

Based in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus, MountMed considers mountain regions as dynamic territories of innovation and learning, places where tradition intersects with innovation, knowledge translates into action and communities are empowered to shape their own futures. The future of mountain regions is built from within.
