Empowering Mountain Communities Through Knowledge and Action
● Vision, Mission and Strategic OrientationMountMed envisions Mediterranean mountain regions as vibrant and resilient territories where communities lead their own sustainable development journeys. By positioning the Troodos Mountains as a reference territory, the Institute works to unlock the environmental, cultural and economic potential of mountain areas while addressing challenges such as climate change, demographic decline and resource pressures.
Through its mission, MountMed acts as a catalyst for sustainable mountain development by connecting research, policy and local action. Guided by three strategic pillars—Research, Education and Action—the Institute transforms knowledge into practical solutions, strengthens local capacities and fosters collaboration among communities, institutions and experts to support prosperous, resilient and self-determined mountain territories.
Vision
Mediterranean mountains to be transformed into dynamic spaces of innovation, learning, and action, where empowered mountain communities lead their own pathways towards sustainable territorial development
The Institute works towards a future in which mountain territories are resilient, vibrant and self-sustaining, places where people choose to live, work, create and remain connected to their communities, while local economies thrive and ecosystems and cultural landscapes managed with care, resilience and long-term responsibility. Its main objective is to establish the Troodos Mountains as a reference territory for implementing this vision. As a Mediterranean island mountain region, it brings together many of the challenges faced by mountain territories - environmental pressures, demographic decline, resource constraints and the need for renewed local economies - while also holding significant natural, cultural and productive assets. Towards that, MountMed builds on Cyprus’ distinctive policy framework, as one of the few EU Member States with an internationally recognised National Strategy for the Development of Mountain Communities (UN General Assembly, A/77/217, 22 July 2022).
Mission
MountMed’s mission is to strengthen its role and capacity as a catalyst for the sustainable development of Mediterranean island mountain regions, and Cyprus in particular, by coordinating the transfer of knowledge, methods and resources, advancing advocacy and networking, and supporting targeted interventions in mountain territories.
The Institute facilitates collaboration among local communities, grassroots organisations, public authorities, academic and research institutions, social actors, entrepreneurs and international networks. Through this collaborative approach, MountMed advances scientific research, promotes innovation, advocates for effective mountain policies and supports research-driven, community-based initiatives that foster prosperous and resilient mountain territories.
Strategic Orientation: Research, Education and Action
MountMed’s strategic orientation is based on three interconnected axes: Research, Education and Action.
Research provides the scientific basis for understanding mountain territories as socio-ecological, cultural and economic systems.
Education and capacity building strengthen the knowledge and skills of local actors, institutions and communities.
Action translates knowledge into practical interventions, supporting mountain territories in designing and implementing their own pathways towards sustainability and resilience.
Guided by the principle of research-action, MountMed seeks to bridge science, policy and local practice. Knowledge is not produced in isolation; it becomes a driver of territorial transformation. Activating local knowledge alongside interdisciplinary research can transform communities into open learning fields, where territorial challenges become opportunities for collective learning, experimentation and implementation.
