Pentadaktylos MountainPentadaktylos Mountain is the occupied mountain-symbol of Cyprus. Α place of memory, cultural identity, ecological value and unresolved historical injustice.
Stretching along the northern coast of the island, from the area of Kormakitis in the west towards the Karpasia peninsula in the east, Pentadaktylos is one of the defining mountain formations of Cyprus. It carries exceptional historical, cultural, symbolic and ecological significance. Since the Turkish invasion of 1974, Pentadaktylos has been under Turkish occupation. This is a territorial, cultural, and environmental reality that continues to affect the mountain, its communities, cultural heritage, and natural environment.
Pentadaktylos is a mountain of major natural value. Its distinctive geology, dominated by limestone, dolomites and marbles, has shaped important underground aquifers and springs. It hosts important habitat types and a rich flora, including a significant number of endemic plant species of Cyprus, some of which are locally endemic to the mountain.
Its cultural landscape is equally important. Pentadaktylos carries castles, monasteries, legends, villages, sacred sites, local memory and historical struggles. It is inseparable from the identity of Cyprus and from the history of its mountain communities. Today, many of these cultural and natural assets remain inaccessible, endangered or altered under the conditions of occupation.
For MountMed, Pentadaktylos is acknowledged as an integral part of the mountain geography, cultural memory and environmental heritage of Cyprus. At the same time, because it lies in the occupied northern part of the island, it cannot currently constitute a direct field of operational intervention. MountMed’s active research-action work is therefore focused on the Troodos Mountain Range, without erasing Pentadaktylos from the national mountain narrative.
